MSWC Day 5: Group stage hits halfway point


Group stage reaches its halfway point as teams continue battling For The Title of World Champion. You can find all the information about the event, including full articles, photo galleries, boxscores, stats, standings and rosters at the tournament’s microsite.

Mexico 2-7 Cuba

Cuba secured its second consecutive win and improved its record to 3-1 with a 7-2 win against Mexico, in the first game of the day at Svoboda Prak in Prague, Czech Republic. The Caribbean team jumped ahead early in the game and never looked back.

The winning pitcher was Alain Roman, who had a strong 4-inning outing, with 1 hit, 1 run, 1 walk and 2 strikeouts.

Tomorrow Cuba will take on Argentina and Mexico will play Botswana.

South Africa 3-4 Singapore

Singapore recovered from a 2-run deficit in the last two innings of the game to clinch a historic walk-off victory over South Africa, 4-3. It was the fourth win ever for Singapore in their third participation at the Men’s Softball World Championship.

In the bottom of the sixth Ziglar Oh tripled in the second run of Singapore, and in the bottom of the seventh Joshua Tam scored on a wild pitch and then Tai Jin Tan completed the come-from-behind win with a walk-off sacrifice fly.

Botswana 0-7 New Zealand

Ben Enoka hit a two-run homer, and his brother Thomas produced the first two runs of the day at Svoboda Park to guide New Zealand to its third win of the tournament. Today the world champions defeated Botswana 7-0 in five innings to recover from last night’s loss against Mexico.

With this score, New Zealand’s record moves to 3-1, while Botswana drops to 1-3.

Netherlands 1-9 Venezuela

Venezuela scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth to remain undefeated in the Men’s Softball World Championship, after four games.

Carlos Ucero won the game in 1.2 innings of work with 1 hit and 1 K. Maiker Pimentel pitched 3.1 innings in relief with 3 strikeouts and 5 hits.

Denmark 3-5 Australia

Australia clinched a come from behind win over Denmark, 5-3, in the fifth day of competition of the Men’s Softball World Championship, and clinched its third win of the tournament.

Australia is now 3-1 and tomorrow will take on South Africa. In the other hand, Denmark (1-3) will play its continental rivals, the Netherlands.

Philippines 0-10 Japan

Two big innings lifted Japan past the Philippines, 10-0, to remain unbeaten and on top of Group A. They scored five runs in the second inning, including a 2-RBI triple by Hikaru Matsuda; and five more in the third, highlighted by a 2-run home run off the bat of Seii Kuroiwa and a bases clearing double by Daishi Uramoto.

Czech Republic 3-6 Argentina

Argentina used three long balls to score the first four runs of the game, en route to a key victory in Group A against host Czech Republic, 6-3, for the Group A of the Men’s Softball World Championship. Argentina connected 10 hits in total, 6 extra bases, to support the pitching staff.

The winner was Roman Godoy, who pitched 5 innings allowing 5 hits and 2 walks, with 7 strikeouts. Marek Joska (2.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 SO) was charged with the loss.

United States 1-4 Canada

Canada claimed the North American classic against United States, 4-1, and remains undefeated on top of Group B. Four of the five runs of the game were scored via the home run.

Canada will play tomorrow Venezuela, in a duel of undefeated teams. USA is now 2-2 and will play its fifth game with Singapore.
